Resources : Gypsy and TravellersDesigning Gypsy and Traveller Sites: Good Practice Guide. CLG, 15 May 2008 This document sets out good practice in respect of the design of Gypsy and Traveller sites. It is intended to provide potential developers and existing site owners with an understanding of the design features needed to help ensure a site is successful, easy to manage and maintain, including site location, layout, size and the services and facilities need to make it operate effectively. Despite the first Gypsies being recorded in England as far back as the 15th century (Murdoch and Johnson 2004), they are a group largely isolated from the rest of society. The shortage of suitable accommodation has been recognised as the most pressing issue to face Gypsies and Travellers, with other health, educational and social care needs unlikely to be addressed until adequate appropriate accommodation is available. This report by East Durham Homes shows the results of a consultation project, with their tenants, between November 2009 and May 2010.
