Trauma Informed Practice

Session Information:

This session acts as an introduction to the principles of trauma informed practice and is designed for professionals working with vulnerable adults that may have experienced or be actively experiencing traumatic situations. We discuss the definitions of trauma and the impact of trauma on the brain, specifically how this impact may translate into behaviour that we witness regularly among our service users, adverse childhood experiences and how they impact adults in later life, the fight, flight or freeze response and how this impacts behaviour and decision-making, the principles of trauma informed practice and how these can be embedded into practice and service design, behaviour as a form of communication, how to respond to trauma behaviours in a way that avoids re-traumatisation, trauma informed environments and how to ensure that our workspaces encourage engagement, and case study based discussions.

Following the session staff should have an increased understanding of trauma and the impact of trauma on behaviour, communication and engagement, and be better prepared to design their approach in a way that is mindful of this, and best encourages engagement and positive interaction and avoids re-traumatisation.
