This is an introductory workshop to ensure participants understand the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion - building on any existing training to explore additional concepts that are relevant to the workplace and how participants carry out their day-to-day roles.

Some of the activities/resources that may be used include breakout discussions in small groups using the Gardenswartz & Rowe ‘Four Layers of Diversity’ wheel, videos such as the ‘privilege race’ and ‘microaggressions are like mosquito bites’, breakout discussions on the topic of being included/excluded, short excerpts from selected TED talks, etc.

Session outline:

  • Intro and welcome
  • What we mean by the terms equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI)
  • Why is EDI important to the organisation and the third sector?
  • What the Equality Act and Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) are (the ‘legal case’) including:
  • Protected characteristics
  • Types of discrimination
  • The obligations of both individuals and organisations.
  • The ‘business case’ and ‘moral case’ for EDI - the bottom line vs. embracing fairness​
  • What’s happening today?
  • The importance of an inclusive culture and using inclusive language
  • Understanding microaggressions and their impact
  • Introduction to allyship, and how to embrace it above passive bystandership​
  • Wrap and overview of the session
