Confidence grows when people are given the right support, space to reflect and encouragement to recognise what they already bring. That message came through strongly at the recent graduation of the Staff Development and Mentoring Programme, as participants shared stories of challenge, progress and renewed self-belief.
The programme brings mentors and mentees together in purposeful partnerships, combining honest conversation, coaching and practical tools with opportunities to learn from others. Participants described it not simply as professional development, but as a journey that made a difference both inside and outside the workplace.
Support that creates lasting change
For mentees, having a trusted mentor provided perspective at moments of uncertainty. Claire spoke about being encouraged to focus on what was within her control, to look honestly at her situation and to keep moving forward even when she felt reserved or worried. She also reflected on finding her voice, embracing opportunities and recognising neurodivergence as a strength that shapes how she learns, connects and designs inclusive training.
Carol shared how organisational change and joining a much larger team had affected her confidence after many years in the same organisation. Through mentoring, continued learning, support from colleagues and tools such as Strengthscope, she was able to reconnect with her strengths, rebuild her self-belief and feel ready to embrace change.
You do not need to have it all figured out to move forward. Say yes to opportunities, even when they feel uncomfortable — that is where growth happens.
A shared commitment to growth
Mentors also described the relationship as a two-way experience. Beverley celebrated the courage shown by the mentees and the way they had become role models for others. Their progress reinforced her own commitment to coaching and mentoring, while demonstrating how a strengths-based approach can help people recognise their gifts and the value they bring.
The stories shared at graduation showed the programme’s wider impact: greater confidence, a stronger sense of belonging, improved resilience and a willingness to take the next step. One participant is progressing through Aspire and moving into mentoring herself, extending the cycle of support to others. Colleagues and families have noticed the change too, underlining that meaningful development reaches beyond a job title.
At Housing Diversity Network, we are proud to create opportunities where people can be heard, challenged and supported to grow. Thank you to every mentor, mentee, colleague and partner who makes the Staff Development and Mentoring Programme possible.
